Put Slack to Work With Claude
Your company already has valuable information inside Slack.
Agency Growth helps connect approved Slack information and workflows to Claude so employees can find context, prepare work, update processes and complete recurring tasks without manually moving information between systems.
Connection method: Anthropic provides two documented paths: a Slack connector inside Claude (available on paid Claude plans) that lets Claude search approved channels, direct messages, and shared files, and a Claude app for Slack in the Slack Marketplace that brings Claude into channels, threads, and direct messages on paid Slack plans.
What information moves between the systems
Inside Slack
- Project and client conversations in channels
- Decisions and approvals recorded in threads
- Files and documents shared in channels and direct messages
- Announcements, process changes, and policy updates
- Questions and answers that never made it into formal documentation
- Status updates from teams and individual contributors
What Claude can read
- Messages in channels the connected user has access to
- Thread conversations and replies
- Direct messages visible to the connected user
- Files shared in the workspace
- Search results across the workspace, scoped to the connected user's own Slack permissions
Actions that may be supported
- Searching approved channels, direct messages, and shared files from inside a Claude conversation
- Summarizing long threads and channel activity into plain answers
- Answering questions inside Slack when a teammate mentions the Claude app in a thread
- Drafting replies, status updates, and summaries based on Slack context
- Posting responses back into Slack threads through the Claude app may be supported depending on your Slack plan and how the app is configured
- Routing follow-up work into other connected systems may be supported depending on your Claude plan and enabled connectors
Permission and access considerations
- A Slack workspace admin must approve the Claude app before anyone in the company can use it
- On Claude Team and Enterprise plans, an organization owner must enable the Slack connector before individual employees can connect
- Claude reads Slack through each connected user's own access; an employee cannot use Claude to see channels or messages they could not already open themselves
- We recommend starting with a small set of approved channels and expanding deliberately
- Least privilege applies: connect only the accounts and channels a workflow actually needs, not the whole workspace by default
What teams build on Claude + Slack
Preparing account briefs before sales calls using recent channel history
Summarizing a project channel into a weekly client status update
Catching a returning employee up on decisions made while they were out
Turning a long troubleshooting thread into a documented fix the whole team can find
Finding the latest version of a decision or file without asking the channel again
Drafting answers to common internal questions using past answers already in Slack
Pulling context from a client channel before writing a proposal or scope
Reviewing handoff threads so the next person starts with full context
Setup requirements and human checkpoints
Setup requirements
- A paid Slack plan; the Claude app for Slack is available to workspaces on paid plans
- A paid Claude plan; the Slack connector is documented as available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans
- Slack workspace admin approval to install the Claude app
- On Team and Enterprise plans, an organization owner to enable the Slack connector
- A written decision about which channels and information Claude should be able to reach
- A short rollout plan so employees know what to use Claude for and what stays manual
Human approval points
- Anything posted to a client-facing or externally shared channel gets human review first
- Summaries used in client reporting are checked against the source thread before they go out
- Process or policy updates drafted from Slack context are approved by the process owner
- Any reply drafted for a specific person is reviewed by that person before it is sent
Limitations and security considerations
Limitations
- Claude reads what the connected user can read; it does not bypass Slack permissions, so gaps in channel access are gaps in context
- Slack content is informal and unstructured; answers built on it inherit whatever is incomplete or out of date in the threads
- Conversations with Claude inside Slack and conversations inside the Claude app are separate; history does not carry across the two surfaces
- Exact features vary by Slack plan and Claude plan and can change; we verify current behavior during implementation rather than assuming it
- The connector is built for search and context, not hands-off automation; fully unattended recurring jobs may need additional tooling around it
Security considerations
- Slack often holds sensitive material: HR conversations, client terms, credentials pasted into direct messages. Decide what Claude should reach before connecting, not after
- Access is scoped to each connected user's Slack permissions, so your existing Slack access model is the real control surface; tighten it first if it has drifted
- Admin approval of the app and owner enablement of the connector act as organization-level gates; keep both deliberate rather than open by default
- Review Anthropic's published documentation on connector data handling and retention as part of your vendor review
- Log who connected what, and revisit connected channels on a schedule instead of letting access accumulate
If the native path is not a fit
- Claude supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), so a custom MCP server can expose a tightly scoped slice of Slack instead of the native connector
- A scheduled export workflow can summarize approved Slack content into documents in a system Claude already reads, which keeps Slack itself disconnected
- The Anthropic API combined with the Slack API supports a fully custom integration where an internal tool controls exactly what Claude sees and posts
- Some companies start narrower: connect Claude to the documentation system where Slack decisions get recorded, and leave Slack for people
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Claude read every message in our Slack workspace?
No. Claude reads through the connected user's own Slack permissions. If an employee cannot open a channel or direct message, Claude cannot read it on their behalf. Workspace admins also control whether the app and connector are enabled at all.
Do we need specific plans to connect Claude and Slack?
The Claude app for Slack is available to workspaces on paid Slack plans, and Anthropic documents the Slack connector as available on paid Claude plans. Exact availability can change, so we confirm current requirements at the start of every implementation.
Can Claude send messages in Slack for us?
With the Claude app installed, Claude can respond in threads and direct messages where it is invoked. We treat outbound messages as an approval point: nothing client-facing is posted without a person reviewing it first.
What is the first step?
The Implementation Plan. We map what actually lives in your Slack workspace, decide which channels Claude should reach, define approval points, and sequence the rollout so your team gets value in the first week.
Connect Slack to Claude the right way
The implementation plan identifies which connections are practical, which permissions they need, and which should remain separate.
